Founded in 1883 in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland, Thorens stands as one of the oldest and most respected audio manufacturers in the world. What began with music boxes and phonographs evolved into a tale of relentless innovation and precision, placing Thorens at the heart of hi-fi turntable design and engineering for well over a century.

The TD 124: A Legend Is Born

In 1957, Thorens unveiled the TD 124, a turntable that rapidly became an icon among audiophiles and professionals alike. Designed by Louis Thevenaz, the TD 124’s idler-wheel drive, robust build, and elegant engineering established Thorens as a global leader. To this day, many vinyl enthusiasts consider the TD 124 the finest turntable ever made, prized for its pacing, precision, and rich, authoritative sound.

The TD 150: Suspension Revolution

Thorens further changed the landscape in 1965 with the TD 150, introducing a spring-suspended subchassis design. This innovation drastically reduced vibration interference and laid the foundation for future industry standards, including the legendary Linn Sondek LP12. The subsequent TD 160 and TD 125 refined this approach, making subchassis suspension and belt-drive synonymous with high-fidelity vinyl playback.

Reference and Prestige: Demonstrations of Power

From the 1980s, Thorens showcased its manufacturing prowess through limited editions like the Reference (90 kg, up to three tonearms, exclusive customization) and the Prestige (released for the company’s 100th anniversary). These models pushed what was possible in turntable engineering and aesthetics

Technical Innovations and a Legacy of Precision

  • Spring-loaded Subchassis: Thorens’ spring suspension isolated the tonearm and platter, minimizing external vibrations for superior sonic accuracy.

  • Motor Developments: The 1928 introduction of electric motor-driven players marked a technological leap in speed stability and reliability.

  • Tonearm and Cartridge Advancements: Thorens continually developed conventional and tangential tonearms, as well as cutting-edge magnetic cartridge technologies.

  • Collaborations and Modernization: Its recent partnership for advanced vibration isolation and electronic controls exemplifies Thorens’ dedication to pushing sound quality forward.

Endurance Through Audio Eras

Like many manufacturers, Thorens faced turbulence in the digital era but survived bankruptcy and restructuring by recommitting to its foundational values. Today, revitalized under new ownership, Thorens produces modern classics (such as the new TD 124 and TD 1600) that blend contemporary technologies with its historic virtues.

Lasting Importance for Audiophiles

Thorens is revered as a manufacturer whose pioneering designs continue to inspire turntable engineering and listening experiences. By blending Swiss precision with innovative solutions, the brand created models that are benchmarks for performance, durability, and musicality. Whether restoring vintage classics or embracing new technologies, Thorens remains a cornerstone of hi-fi turntable history—a legacy cherished by millions of vinyl enthusiasts around the world.
