ELAC Origins

ELAC, originally founded as Electroacustic GmbH on September 1, 1926, in Kiel, Germany, has a rich history that spans nearly a century. Initially focused on hydroacoustic, the company conducted research on sound propagation in water and air, which laid the groundwork for its future developments in audio technology.

Transition to Consumer Electronics

During World War II, ELAC produced electroacoustic devices for the German Navy, reaching a workforce of about 5,000 employees. However, post-war restrictions forced the company to pivot towards consumer goods. In 1945, it began manufacturing sewing machines and automobile components, and soon after, it ventured into consumer electronics by producing radios for Siemens.

This marked a significant shift as the company started to develop products aimed at the general public.

Introduction of Turntables

A pivotal moment in ELAC's history occurred in 1948 with the launch of its first record player, the PW1. This product established ELAC as a key player in the burgeoning audio market and set the stage for its future success in vinyl turntables.

By the late 1950s, ELAC was recognized as one of the leading manufacturers of turntables globally, alongside other German companies like Dual and Perpetuum Ebner.

Innovations and Patents

Throughout its history, ELAC has been at the forefront of audio innovation. In 1957, it patented a stereophonic phono cartridge that became foundational for modern moving magnet (MM) cartridge technology. This invention not only solidified ELAC's reputation but also facilitated partnerships with other major audio brands.

The company continued to innovate into the late 20th century, introducing advanced technologies such as the JET folded-ribbon tweeter in 1993.

Recent Developments

Despite facing financial challenges that led to bankruptcy in 1978 and the sale of its nautical division to Honeywell, ELAC has remained committed to audio excellence. The company has evolved its product lines to include a wide range of speakers and electronics while maintaining production in Kiel, where it continues to prioritize quality craftsmanship and innovative design.

Today, ELAC is celebrated not only for its historical contributions to audio technology but also for its ongoing commitment to producing high-quality sound systems that appeal to audiophiles worldwide.
