Galibier Design Origins
Galibier Design is a notable American manufacturer of high-end turntables, founded in 2003 by Thom Mackris after a series of collaborative projects that began in the late 1990s. The company's origins trace back to a pivotal meeting between Mackris and Chris Brady in 1998, where both shared a passion for vinyl and audio equipment. Their initial exploration involved building turntables based on designs by German engineer Thomas Scheu, leading to the formation of a group that aimed to create a unique turntable that reflected their design philosophies, particularly emphasizing the use of rigid materials like aluminium for better precision in audio playback.
In December 1999, Mackris and Brady met to discuss their ideas further, which culminated in the decision to develop their own turntable design. They quickly gathered a community of enthusiasts, expanding their team to nearly 60 participants who contributed to the project. This collaboration resulted in the creation of a bearing and platter design that would become foundational for their future products.
By mid-2001, due to logistical challenges and differing visions for business models, Mackris parted ways with Brady and established Galibier Design. The company has since focused on producing turntables characterized by stable designs and high-quality craftsmanship, aiming to create products that endure over time rather than becoming obsolete quickly.
Galibier Design continues to be recognized for its innovative approach within the audiophile community, offering turntables that embody both aesthetic appeal and exceptional sound quality.
