Grundig

Origins of Grundig

Grundig, a well-known manufacturer of audio equipment including turntables, has its origins in Germany and was founded in 1945. Max Grundig, a radio dealer, started the company with the creation of a radio called “Heinzelmann,” which was notable for being a do-it-yourself kit that circumvented post-war rules. The company’s early fame was due to its radios, and it expanded into television production with the launch of its first television set for the first German television channel in 1952. Grundig also ventured into manufacturing tape recorders and other audio equipment, becoming a significant player in the consumer electronics market.

In the 1960s, Grundig began to establish overseas factories, including one in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and another in Portugal. The company continued to innovate, introducing various audio products and systems, including modular hi-fi systems and portable tape recorders. Grundig’s audio division has since evolved, adapting to changing consumer needs and technological advancements. In 2007, the company was acquired by Arçelik, a white goods manufacturer, which allowed Grundig to expand its product range to include home appliances. Today, Grundig continues to manufacture audio equipment, including turntables, and is known for its vintage-inspired designs and modern features like DAB+ connectivity and Bluetooth.
