Korg

Korg Inc., a renowned Japanese manufacturer of electronic musical instruments and audio equipment, was founded in 1962 in Tokyo under the original name Keio Electronic Laboratories. The company was established by Tsutomu Katoh, a nightclub owner, and Tadashi Osanai, an engineer and accomplished accordionist. The name "Keio" derived from the location near the Keio train line and combined the founders' initials. Dissatisfied with existing rhythm machines, Osanai convinced Katoh to finance the development of a better electro-mechanical rhythm device, leading to their first product, the Donca Matic DA-20, released in 1963.

In 1967, engineer Fumio Mieda developed a programmable organ prototype for the company, which was marketed under the brand name "KORG"-a combination of "Keio" and "Organ"-marking the first use of the Korg name. The company shifted focus from rhythm machines and organs to synthesizers, releasing Japan’s first synthesizer, the MiniKorg 700, in 1973. Since then, Korg has been a pioneer in music technology, credited with innovations such as the key transpose function, effects on synthesizers, and the sample + synthesis sound design.

Today, Korg is headquartered in Inagi, Tokyo, and remains a private company known for its innovative electronic instruments, including synthesizers, digital pianos, tuners, and more, continuing its mission to create new musical experiences and inspire musicians worldwide
