Lenco
Origins of Lenco
Lenco, the audio equipment manufacturer known for its turntables, has its origins in Switzerland. The company was founded in 1946 by Fritz and Marie Laeng in Burgdorf, Switzerland. Fritz and Marie started a consumer electronics retail shop, which later grew into a factory where the products sold in the shop were produced. The name “Lenco” is derived from the surnames of the founders.
In the mid-1950s, Lenco began supplying turntables for sale in other countries, initially under the name of a local commercial partner. The company’s first turntable was launched in 1949, taking advantage of the new LP record format introduced by Columbia Records.
In the late 1990s, the main office of Lenco moved to the Netherlands, where it is currently headquartered in Kerkrade, Limburg. The name “Lenco” is now owned by Dutch concern Commaxx International NV.
