Memorex

Origins of Memorex

Memorex, a well-known manufacturer of audio equipment including turntables, originated in 1961 in Silicon Valley. Initially, the company focused on producing computer tapes and later expanded into other media products and IBM-compatible peripheral equipment. In 1971, Memorex entered the consumer media business and launched its famous “Is it live, or is it Memorex?” campaign, featuring Ella Fitzgerald, which helped establish the brand’s reputation for high-quality sound recording and playback. Over the years, Memorex was bought and sold multiple times, with its consumer electronics brand being owned by various companies. As of 2023, the Memorex brand is owned by Mizari Enterprises, which aims to renew and transform the brand using its heritage and brand recognition.
