Origins of Modular Component Systems

The Modular Component System (MCS) was a house brand for consumer electronics, including stereo components and turntables, owned by JC Penny. The company’s products were re-branded from Japanese manufacturers, such as Hitachi, JVC, and Technics. The MCS-6700 turntable, in particular, is actually a re-branded Technics SL-1900 model, specifically the 1950 version, which allowed users to stack up to six LPs. The motor, electronics, and tonearm of the MCS-6700 hail from the Technics model, while the frame and buttons come from Hitachi’s tables. This combination of components from different manufacturers resulted in a unique and stylish turntable. The MCS-6700 was made in Japan and features a fully automatic direct drive system, allowing users to program an album to play up to six times or continuously.
