Origins of Musical Fidelity
Musical Fidelity, a high-end audio manufacturer, was founded in the United Kingdom in 1982 by Antony Michaelson, a clarinetist and Hi-Fi enthusiast. Michaelson started the company after leaving Michaelson & Austin, a predecessor company of which he was a partner. The company’s first product was “The Preamp,” which included moving coil and moving magnet pre-amplification and a single line-level ‘Tuner’ input. This product was designed to address Michaelson’s dissatisfaction with the Michaelson & Austin TVP-1 pre-amplifier.
Musical Fidelity has since become known for its innovative designs and high-quality audio equipment, including turntables. In 2018, the company was acquired by Audio Tuning, an independent audio specialist company based in Austria, which also owns Pro-Ject Audio Systems. Despite this change in ownership, Musical Fidelity continues to retain its British heritage and produces products that maintain the natural, authentic sound that has made the brand respected worldwide.
