Numark

Origins of Numark

Numark Industries, LLC was founded in 1971 by Harry and Robert Kotovsky in Edison, New Jersey. Initially, the company developed a significant following for its mixers, turntables, and speaker enclosures, becoming one of the leading manufacturers in the DJ industry during the disco era.

In 1972, Numark introduced the DM-500, a compact audio mixer and the first DJ mixer with a crossfader. This innovation helped establish Numark as a pioneer in DJ equipment. By 1978, Numark had become the leading DJ equipment supplier in the United States, thanks to the commercial success of its “Mobile Disc Jockey System,” a complete DJ setup that included a mixer, amplifier, equalizer, two turntables, speakers, and a “coffin” case.

In 1991, Jack O’Donnell, the former head of sales and marketing for Stanton Magnetics, purchased Numark. Under his leadership, the company continued to innovate and challenge industry standards, introducing products like the DM1775, the world’s first mixer with a built-in sampler, and the CD-5020, the first dual-well CD player.

Today, Numark is headquartered in Cumberland, Rhode Island, and is part of inMusic Brands, Inc., an American enterprise that owns several audio product brands.
