Origins of Philips

Philips, the Dutch electronics company, has a history of manufacturing audio equipment, including turntables. The origins of Philips as an audio equipment manufacturer can be traced back to the early 20th century when the company was founded in 1891 by Frederik and Gerard Philips. Initially, they focused on producing light bulbs, but over time, the company expanded into various electronic products.

In 1946, Philips acquired a company that pressed records for British Decca’s Dutch outlet in Amsterdam, marking the beginning of its involvement in the music industry. In 1950, Philips founded Philips Phonographische Industrie, which later became Philips Records. This record label began issuing classical music recordings and later expanded to include popular artists from multiple nationalities.

Philips also acquired Marantz, a company renowned for high-end audio and video products, in 1980. Marantz was based in Kanagawa, Japan, and was known for its turntables and other audio equipment. However, in 2002, Marantz Japan merged with Denon to form D&M Holdings, and Philips sold its remaining stake in D&M Holdings in 2008.
