Origins of Pickering
Norman C. Pickering founded Pickering & Company in 1945, initially focusing on improving sound reproduction through the development of phonograph pickups and cartridges. The company was established after Pickering developed a pickup that reduced record wear and increased sound accuracy. Initially, the Pickering apparatus was marketed for professional use in recording studios and radio stations, but by 1947, it became clear that there was potential in the consumer market. However, the introduction of the LP record in 1948 caught Pickering off-guard, requiring him to rework his design to accommodate the new format. Pickering & Company became known for its innovative audio equipment, including phonograph cartridges and needles, and held more patents and industry firsts than any other manufacturer in the world.
