Sharp Optonica

Origins of Sharp Optonica

The origins of Sharp Optonica, a manufacturer of high-end audio products, trace back to 1975 when Sharp Corporation of Japan created the Optonica brand to compete in the high-end audio market. Initially, the brand offered a range of hi-fi components, including receivers, tuners, amplifiers, speakers, and turntables. One of the notable products was the direct drive turntable RP-3636, which featured a unique construction of Mikage granite stone that virtually eliminated feedback and prevented resonance from reaching the tonearm. This turntable was well-received by audiophiles and collectors due to its exceptional design and performance. However, despite earning accolades like the French Laurier d’Or in 1977, Optonica did not achieve significant sales success. The brand was later reintroduced in 1988 for a high-end line of television receivers and audio products, but it was discontinued in 1991.
