The Strathearn audio company, manufacturer of the SM 2000 turntables, originated in Northern Ireland, specifically in Belfast. The company’s history is marked by challenges, including the troubled political climate of the time. According to available information, the Strathearn SM 2000 turntable was an improved version of the earlier SMA2 model, addressing design flaws such as a bendy headshell, poor turntable bearing design, and flimsy baseplate. Despite its potential, the company’s operations were impacted by the IRA shooting of a businessman at the gates, leading to a withdrawal of government funding. As a result, the Strathearn SM 2000 turntable is now considered a rare and unique item, with some considering it collectible.
