Origins of Transcriptors

Transcriptors, an audio company known for manufacturing turntables, tone arms, and accessories, was founded in 1960 by David Gammon, a Coventry-born engineer and designer. Gammon started the company along with his brother Anthony, who served as the secretary, a legal requirement at the time. The company quickly became one of the world’s leading manufacturers of manual turntables and one of the most modern hi-fi manufacturing plants in Europe during the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s.

David Gammon designed several iconic products, including the Transcriptor arm, the sweep arm, and the stylus brush, which were created due to the lack of professional devices available from other audio companies. His designs, particularly the Hydraulic Reference turntable, have been widely recognized and used in numerous television commercials and films, such as “A Clockwork Orange” (1971) and “The Look of Love” (2013).
