Well Tempered Lab

Origins of Well Tempered Lab

The Well Tempered Lab, manufacturer of high-quality turntables, was founded by Bill Firebaugh, a retired aerospace engineer. The origins of the company can be traced back to Firebaugh’s innovative approach to phonograph design, which was a reaction to the designs of his predecessors.

Firebaugh introduced the Well Tempered Tonearm in the early 1990s, followed by the Well Tempered Turntable. The company’s name, “Well Tempered Lab,” is believed to reflect Firebaugh’s designs that aimed to balance and optimize the performance of his products, much like tempering the tuning of a musical instrument to play well in multiple keys. The company is now headquartered in New Zealand and continues to manufacture its products in China, keeping the prices comparatively modest.
