The AEG Magnetophon K9 (also referred to as Magnetophon K9 or K 9) is a late 1940s post-WWII professional/studio reel-to-reel tape recorder, produced approximately 1945–1950 (manufactured in Germany by AEG, Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft, in Berlin, with some units under Telefunken branding). It was a direct evolution of the wartime and immediate post-war K-series (K7/K8), serving as one of the first widely used production Magnetophon models after the war. The K9 was designed primarily for broadcast and studio applications, with refinements for improved reliability and flexibility, including interchangeable head carriers (Kopfträger) and dual-speed capability in some variants.


This was a full-track mono (Vollspur) machine in its standard configuration (single wide track for maximum signal strength), though some studio variants supported multi-track or stereo experiments. It used paper-based magnetic tape early on (BASF Type L or similar), transitioning to early plastic bases post-war.

The interchangeable head carrier allowed flexibility (e.g., different gaps or configurations), and the dual-speed motor (76.2/38.1 cm/s) made it versatile.


Surviving examples are rare (mostly collector or museum pieces; some restored and demonstrated). They are prized for historical importance as one of the first post-war production Magnetophons, bridging wartime technology to the 1950s consumer boom. Restorations are specialized (tube checks, bias circuit, tape compatibility with modern tape).


Common issues (historical/modern): Fragile early tape (paper base), tube reliability, mechanical wow/flutter (improved over wartime), and head wear. Modern use requires careful tape selection (original paper tape fragile; plastic base better).
