Additional Information

The AEG-Telefunken Magnetophon M430 (also known as Magnetophon 430 or M 430) is a mid-to-late 1970s consumer stereo reel-to-reel tape recorder, produced approximately 1975–1980 (manufactured in Germany by Telefunken under the AEG-Telefunken brand). It was one of the final models in the Magnetophon line during the decline of consumer open-reel production, positioned as a mid-range hi-fi stereo deck with full stereo capability, compact design, and integrated amplification. The M430 was a vierspur-stereo (quarter-track stereo) machine aimed at home users for radio dubbing, microphone recording, and playback.

This model featured a single-speed design optimized for convenience and longer recording time on standard reels, with a focus on portability and ease of use rather than maximum fidelity.

Key Technical Specifications

  • Recording/Playback System — 4-track (quarter-track), 2-channel stereo/mono compatible; records and plays stereo on tracks 1-4 forward and 3-2 reverse (manual tape flip required); mono compatible.

  • Tape Speeds — Single speed:3¾ ips (9.5 cm/s)

  • Reel Size — Up to 7 inches (18 cm) maximum diameter.

  • Frequency Response (approximate, typical tolerances; varies by tape/condition):At 9.5 cm/s: 63 Hz – 12,500 Hz Respectable for mid-1970s consumer mono/stereo at this speed.

  • Wow & Flutter — Approximately 0.2–0.3% at 9.5 cm/s (typical for single-motor consumer design).

  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio — Around 45–50 dB (standard for transistor era consumer deck).

  • Heads — 2 heads: combined record/playback (permalloy) + erase head (no separate playback head for off-tape monitoring).

  • Drive SystemSingle motor (synchronous or induction type); belt/idler drive; mechanical brakes; fast wind/rewind.

  • Electronics — Fully transistorized; printed circuit board amplifier.

  • Amplification & Speakers — Built-in stereo amplifiers; dual internal loudspeakers; output power sufficient for monitoring (typically few watts per channel).

  • Inputs —Microphone: low-level.
    Radio/line/phono: higher level.
    DIN-style connectors standard.

  • Outputs —Line out.
    Headphones (monitor).
    External speakers or amp.
    DIN-style.

  • Features —Single or twin VU meters/level indicators.
    Basic transport controls.
    Portable/tabletop design with lid/handle.

  • Power — AC mains (multi-voltage switchable, e.g., 110–240 V); consumption moderate.

  • Build & Dimensions — Tabletop case (often silver/grey with wood accents); approx. ~400 × 300 × 150 mm (estimated); weight ~7–9 kg.

  • Manufacturing — Germany (Telefunken/AEG-Telefunken).

Performance & Legacy Context

The Magnetophon M430 was a practical late-1970s consumer deck—offering quarter-track stereo, transistor reliability, and integrated amp/speakers for convenience. It delivered decent clarity and stereo imaging at 3¾ ips for radio dubbing or home voice/music recording, with acceptable dynamics for its intended market. As a single-speed, 2-head model, it prioritized affordability and simplicity over hi-fi performance.

Common issues today: Belt/idler degradation (goo/melting—kits needed), dried electrolytic capacitors, transistor aging, dirty heads (alignment critical), worn idler tires/clutches, and mechanical wear. Restorations are straightforward—many units revive well for vintage consumer use. Service manuals scarce (mostly German originals via Radiomuseum or collector sites).

Compared to siblings:

  • Magnetophon M300 series — Earlier mid-1960s models (mono portables).

  • M207/M230/M250/M291/M501 — Higher-range stereo with 3-head/three-speed.

  • M430 — Late single-speed quarter-track stereo consumer portable.
