The Aiwa TP-704 is a compact 1965–1968 portable open-reel tape recorder from Aiwa's early solid-state lineup, designed for consumer dictation, lectures, and basic music dubbing with mains/battery flexibility.



Positioning and Era


Mid-1960s "lunchbox" mono portable emphasizing affordability and speed selection via electrical switch (unlike cheaper capstan-sleeve models), bridging Aiwa's pocket recorders and larger suitcase decks.​



Transport and Tape Format

  • Reel size: 5-inch maximum (7-inch possible with care).

  • Drive system: Capstan drive with pinch roller; fast-forward capable.

  • Speeds: 1⅞ ips and 3¾ ips (electrical switch).

  • Track format: 2-track, single-channel monaural (half-track mono).​

  • Heads: 2 permalloy heads (erase + record/playback).​
