Additional Information

ATR-102 was a Japanese consumer novelty machine from the early 1960s that combined a reel-to-reel tape recorder, AM radio, and 45 rpm record playback in one unit. Answer is listed as the brand, with Japan as the country of manufacture and a release window of 1960–1963. The machine is described as a “marvelous novelty item” from an obscure Japanese company, which matches its all-in-one consumer design. The platter for 45 rpm records was reportedly driven by the left-hand reel, which is an unusual mechanical choice.

Technical character

Because it is a full-track mono machine, the Answer ATR-102 is aimed at basic home listening or demonstration use rather than hi-fi stereo tape playback. The single slow tape speed of 1 7/8 IPS points to voice/music playback and compact design priorities, not high-fidelity bandwidth or low noise. Its vintage tube electronics also place it firmly in early-1960s consumer audio engineering.

Design notes

The unit includes an electronic erase head, a level meter, and removable external components like the phono arm and AM antenna, which plug into sockets on the case. That modular, multi-function layout made it more of a compact entertainment center than a dedicated tape deck. In practical terms, it is far less capable than the Ampex ATR-102 in tape handling, calibration flexibility, and mastering performance.
