Additional Information
The Aristona EW5504 is a solid consumer-to-semi-hi-fi 4-track stereo reel-to-reel tape recorder from the mid-to-late 1970s (around 1977). It was produced under the Aristona brand — a budget/export/parallel line of Philips — and is essentially identical to the Philips N4504. Some units were made under Philips license in Austria and also appeared under other rebadges like Dux.
Key Technical Specifications
Format: Open-reel (reel-to-reel) magnetic tape recorder.
Track Configuration: 4-track, 2-channel stereo (quarter-track). Supports full stereo recording and playback, as well as mono operation. Compatible with pre-recorded stereo tapes.
Tape Speeds: Three speeds — 4.75 cm/s (1⅞ ips), 9.5 cm/s (3¾ ips), and 19 cm/s (7½ ips). The highest speed offers the best audio quality for music.
Reel Capacity: Up to 18 cm (7 inches) diameter reels.
Drive System: 3 DC motors (one capstan motor with tacho/servo control for precise speed regulation + two separate reel motors for improved tension and handling). Includes tape tension stabilizers for smooth operation.
Heads: 3 heads — separate erase, record, and playback heads. This allows off-tape monitoring during recording.
Electronics: Fully solid-state (transistorized).
Frequency Response (at 19 cm/s / 7½ ips): 35 Hz – 26 kHz (excellent for a consumer machine of the era; some sources note up to 25 kHz).
Wow & Flutter: 0.05% (at 7½ ips) — very good speed stability thanks to the servo-controlled capstan.
Signal-to-Noise Ratio: Up to 70 dB (with some references mentioning >58 dB depending on measurement and noise reduction use).
Total Harmonic Distortion: Approximately 3%.
Inputs: Microphone (~0.2 mV), line/phono/radio (~100 mV).
Outputs: Line out (~0.25–1 V), headphone jack, external speaker/amplifier connections.
Power Supply: AC mains, switchable 110/220–240 V.
Dimensions (approx.): 41.5 × 42.5 × 18.5 cm (16-3/8 × 16-3/4 × 7-1/4 inches).
Weight: Approximately 10 kg (22 lbs).
Features
Stereo recording with two microphones or line sources.
Off-tape monitoring for real-time comparison during recording.
Solenoid-activated transport controls (Record, Play, Pause, Stop, Fast Forward, Rewind) for smoother operation.
Tape counter.
Recording level controls and indicators.
Some variants include a Dynamic Noise Limiter (DNL) switch for reduced tape hiss.
Suitable for home hi-fi use: live music recording, vinyl/radio dubbing, and high-quality archiving.
Performance Context
The Aristona EW5504 / Philips N4504 was one of the stronger consumer-level reel-to-reel machines from Philips in the late 1970s. The combination of 3 motors + 3 heads + servo capstan delivered noticeably better performance than simpler single-motor/2-head models (such as the earlier Aristona 9137 or 9199). At 19 cm/s it could produce quite musical and detailed sound with low wow/flutter and a wide, extended frequency response. It was not a professional studio deck (like Revox or Ampex) but represented a solid step up for serious home enthusiasts.
Build and Market Position
Sturdy tabletop design with typical Philips/Ariston a functional aesthetics (metal chassis, reliable construction).
Positioned as a mid-to-upper consumer model, often sold at a more accessible price than full Philips-branded equivalents.
Aristona versions were popular in European and export markets.
