Additional Information

The Braun TG-550 is a late-1960s fully transistorized open-reel tape deck from Braun's "studio" hi-fi series, emphasizing professional-grade features like 3-motor drive and dual-track capability in a compact Dieter Rams-designed chassis.

Basic Concept

  • Produced 1968–1976 (limited run of ~700 units), targeted for integration with "studio 500" systems; priced around DM 2,400 new.

  • 33 transistors; table-top model (420 × 170 × 320 mm, 20 kg) with metal case, optional remote (TGF2), and horizontal/vertical operation.

  • 2-track stereo record/play plus 4-track stereo playback compatibility via extra head.

Transport Mechanics

  • Speeds: 9.5/19 cm/s (3¾/7½ ips); max 18 cm reels; wow/flutter <0.1% at 19 cm/s.

  • 3-motor system (Papst hysteresis sync capstan motor, separate reel motors) with regulated tension arm, electro-mechanical braking, and 80s rewind for 540m tape.

  • Push-button controls with electrical interlocks, auto tape-end stop (no foil needed).

Heads and Electronics

  • 4 stereo heads: erase, record (2-track), playback (2-track), plus 4-track playback head; hyperbolic full-metal heads by W. Bogen.

  • EQ: 3180 µs/50 µs at 19 cm/s, 3180 µs/90 µs at 9.5 cm/s; 100 kHz bias oscillator.

  • Inputs: mic 100 µV/1 kΩ, radio 5 mV/50 kΩ, phono 100 mV/1 MΩ; outputs: line 1 V/5 kΩ, headphone 1 V/4 kΩ (400 Ω).
