It represents one of the scarcest models in Crown's lineup—sources indicate only 2 known surviving examples today—positioned as a high-end consumer or semi-pro stereo deck during the shift from tube to solid-state technology.


This model is essentially a variant or evolution of the earlier Crown 800 tube (valve) series (often called the "800 tube machine" or "C Deck" precursors), but with updated appearance, control layout, power supply tweaks, reel size accommodations, cueing, and function switches considered state-of-the-art for the era. It retained the rugged, overbuilt American engineering Crown was known for (e.g., gentle tape handling, electromagnetic braking precursors, and serviceable design), while bridging to the later solid-state 700/800 pro series (1966+). It was not part of the mainstream SX/CX 700/800 lines but a limited-production or custom-ish transitional unit, often stereo ¼-track (quarter-track) configuration.


Surviving units appear sporadically in vintage markets (e.g., eBay "parts only" or restoration listings at high prices like $5,000+), valued for historical rarity and Crown's reputation for "tape-like" warm sound (slight high-end bump, not ultra-flat).

Design and Build Overview


The Crown 1000 featured Crown's signature overbuilt transport with 3 motors for precise tension and low wow/flutter, electromagnetic braking (no mechanical pads for smoother stops), and modular-ish elements for serviceability. The head assembly mirrored early 800 tube "B Deck" issues (heads mounted to the cover, complicating alignment), but it incorporated refinements in controls and power for better usability.

As a transitional model, it bridged Crown's 1950s tube recorders (e.g., Prince, Imperial) and the landmark solid-state 700/800 pro series (SX/CX electronics, introduced mid-1960s). It emphasized gentle tape handling (ideal for preserving tapes) and a warm, non-flat "tape sound" with slight frequency contouring.


Today, these are ultra-rare collector pieces—restoration challenges include tube recapping, bearing/motor service, head relapping/alignment, and sourcing parts (scarce due to low production).
