Additional Information

The Crown CX-822 (also known as Crown Pro 800 Series CX-822) is a high-end, solid-state open-reel tape recorder from Crown International (Elkhart, Indiana, USA), produced from approximately 1968 to 1977. It was part of the flagship Pro 800 series (often called the "800 Series"), where "CX" denotes the deluxe electronics package with plug-in circuit boards, front-panel adjustments (bias, EQ), bass/treble controls, echo capability, and three-speed equalization—positioning it as Crown's top-tier 2-channel model for semi-professional, broadcast, studio mastering, or audiophile use.

The CX-822 shared the robust Pro 800 transport with its larger sibling (the 4-channel CX-844), featuring no tension arms (torque-controlled reel motors for precise handling), full logic pushbutton controls, electromagnetic braking, and exceptional mechanical stability. It was renowned for gentle tape motion, high headroom, and a warm, dynamic "tape magic" sound (slight high-end contour/bloom rather than ultra-flat), often described as one of the finest American reel-to-reel decks of the era—rivaling Ampex or Studer in reliability and musicality while being more serviceable.

Surviving examples are rare collectibles, frequently restored (e.g., recaps, bearings, head relapping) and valued at $4,000–$8,000+ in excellent condition, often in custom walnut cabinets or rack-mount setups.

Key Technical Specifications

  • Tape Speeds: 3.75 ips, 7.5 ips, and 15 ips (three equalized speeds with front-panel selection and full NAB/CCIR switching).

  • Frequency Response (±2 dB typical): 30 Hz–25 kHz+ at 15 ips (record/play); 20 Hz–20/25 kHz at 7.5 ips; ~10–13 kHz –3 dB at 3.75 ips (real-world tests often exceed published specs, e.g., ~26 kHz upper limit at 15 ips on premium tape like Scotch 207).

  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio: 55–60 dB (overall/record-play; high for 2-channel due to low-noise design and quality heads).

  • Wow & Flutter (RMS wideband): ~0.05% at 15 ips; ~0.09% at 7.5 ips (excellent stability from massive flywheel, hysteresis capstan, and neoprene belt drive).

  • Track Configuration: ½-track stereo record/playback (half-track; some units configurable or available as ¼-track variants, but standard CX-822 is ½-track for superior SNR and dynamics in 2-channel use).

  • Heads: 3-head design (erase, record, playback per channel); precision micro-gap permalloy heads with hyperbolic contour, shock-mounted and removable for alignment; off-tape monitoring while recording.

  • Reel Sizes: Up to 10.5" NAB professional (HAP adapters standard; supports 2400'+ reels for long sessions).

  • Motors: 3-motor transport (hysteresis synchronous capstan with large flywheel/belt; separate plug-in torque-controlled reel motors—no tension arms; electromagnetic DC braking for smooth ~3-sec stops from full speed).

  • Timing Accuracy / Speed Stability: ~99.8% (or ~1.8 sec drift in 15 min; short-term adjustable to ±0.05%; fast wind/rewind ~60 sec for 2400').

  • Other Features:CX deluxe electronics: Plug-in modular PC cards for easy service/upgrades; front-panel bias/EQ per channel/speed; center-detent bass/treble controls; echo/sound-on-sound; mixing inputs (multiple mic/line per channel, unbalanced standard; balanced XLR via optional transformers); dual VU meters; headphone jacks; source/tape monitoring; auto-stop; full logic pushbuttons (buffer commands); remote record modification standard (no thumps); remote control optional.
Inputs/Outputs: Mic/line (high impedance or optional balanced); line outputs up to 14V+ (600 ohm balanced/unbalanced).
THD: <1% at 0 VU (1 kHz); high headroom/low distortion.
    Power: ~140–200W, 117 VAC 60 Hz (50 Hz available).

  • Dimensions / Weight: ~19" W x 17–17.5" H x ~10" D (rack-mountable; detachable transport/electronics sections); ~52 lbs (heavier than SX variants due to deluxe CX boards and build).

  • Original Price: ~$1,790–$1,995 (basic machine; higher with options—premium pro positioning, e.g., $1,000+ less than comparable Ampex AG-440 in era pricing).

Design and Build Overview

The CX-822 used the advanced Pro 800 transport (logic-controlled, no tension arms—torque motor control for pantograph-like tension, straight-line threading for editing). Electromagnetic braking ensured gentle, consistent stops/starts. CX electronics were Crown's premium solid-state offering: modular plug-in boards, front adjustments, echo, and 3-speed EQ (vs. simpler SX 2-speed). It was monaural-constructed per channel (mirror-imaged) with shared power supply for reliability.

Built overbuilt for longevity (aluminum chassis, field-replaceable parts), it prioritized professional use—broadcast/TV standard, audiophile mastering—with a warm, blooming sound (dynamics/headroom from tube-like contouring in solid-state). Compared to the CX-844 (4-channel flagship, larger ~19x24.5", 64 lbs, $2,995+), the CX-822 was the compact 2-channel version with identical transport but half the channels/electronics footprint.

Today, these are highly sought-after for restoration and their "Crown jewel" reputation. Common issues: electrolytic caps, bearings, relays, head wear (though low-hour examples exist). Manuals cover Pro 800 series (CX/SX).
