It belongs to the flagship Pro 800 series (often nicknamed the "800 Series" or "Big Red Monster" for its robust build and occasional red accents), where "CX" signifies the deluxe electronics package—featuring plug-in modular circuit boards, front-panel bias/EQ adjustments per channel/speed, bass/treble controls, echo/sound-on-sound capability, and full three-speed equalization (vs. the simpler 2-speed SX variants).


The CX-824 was the ¼-track (four-track) stereo configuration of the 2-channel lineup (2-channel record/playback, but with four discrete tracks for bidirectional use, overdubbing, or reserve tracks). It shared the same professional Pro 800 transport as the half-track CX-822 (½-track stereo) and the larger 4-channel CX-844, emphasizing exceptional tape handling, reliability, and musicality for semi-pro studios, broadcast, mastering, or audiophile home use. Collectors often hail it as one of the finest American reel-to-reel decks, with a warm, dynamic "tape bloom" sound (slight high-end contour rather than dead-flat), high headroom, and rugged overbuilt construction.


Surviving units are rare collectibles, frequently restored (recaps, bearings, head relapping) and fetching $4,000–$8,000+ in good condition, often in custom walnut cabinets or rack setups.

Design and Build Overview

CX electronics were Crown's premium solid-state offering: modular plug-in boards, front adjustments, echo, and 3-speed EQ (vs. SX's simpler 2-speed). It was monaural-constructed per channel (mirror-imaged) with shared power supply for reliability.


Built ruggedly for longevity (aluminum chassis, field-replaceable parts), it prioritized professional semi-pro use—broadcast/TV standard, audiophile mastering—with warm, blooming sound (dynamics/headroom from slight contouring). Compared to the CX-822 (half-track stereo sibling: same transport/electronics but wider tracks for better SNR/dynamics in 2-channel), the CX-824 traded some per-track quality for ¼-track versatility (overdubs, longer bidirectional play). It was below the 4-channel CX-844 in scale but top-tier for stereo/multi-pass.
