Fostex E16

The Fostex E-16 is a 16-track, 16-channel analog multitrack recorder that records on ½-inch magnetic tape at 15 inches per second (ips). It was positioned as a more compact and studio-friendly successor to earlier models like the B-16, featuring Dolby C noise reduction to improve signal-to-noise performance on the narrow track format.

Noise Reduction: Built-in Dolby C. Essential for managing the noise floor and crosstalk due to the narrow tracks on the 1/2" tape. An external noise reduction switch is also provided.

Reel Size: Up to 10-1/2" (270 mm) Uses NAB hubs.

Wow & Flutter: 0.05%WTD (Weighted), A good specification for a machine of this class.

Frequency Response 40 Hz - 18 kHz, 3 dB (at 15 ips). Solid response for the format.

Signal-to-Noise Ratio: 80 dB (with Dolby C). Respectable for a 16-track 1/2" machine.

Motors: Direct drive capstan motor. An improvement over the B-16's belt-driven capstan, offering more stable and reliable tape transport.

This spec set gives the E-16 good frequency extension and robust noise performance for its era, especially with Dolby C noise reduction engaged — essential for keeping hiss down on 16-track half-inch recordings.

Operating Features

• Varispeed/Pitch Control: Allows fine tuning of tape speed (±15 %) which is helpful for matching pitch across machines or creative tape effects. 

• Memory / Locate Functions: The machine can store positions on tape for quick return or cueing with footswitch/remote options. 

• Head Access: The head cover hinges up for easier cleaning and servicing than earlier designs. 

• Transport Control: Optical sensors detect end of tape and stop transport to prevent tape damage.
