Additional Information

The Fostex E-2 is a professional-grade, two-track analog reel-to-reel tape recorder, primarily designed for stereo mastering and mixdown applications in the professional and high-end semi-pro studio environments. It is distinct from Fostex's multitrack machines (like the E-16) as it focuses on high-fidelity two-channel recording.

Tape Transport & Mechanical

  • Tape Format: ¼-inch (6.3 mm) magnetic tape — standard for 2-track hi-fi machines.

  • Track System: 2-track, 2-channel stereo/monaural with a center cue/sync track on some versions.

  • Reel Size: Up to 10½″ reels with NAB/EIA/CINCH adapters.

  • Heads: Three in-line heads — Erase, Record/Playback, and Playback — for superior recording and monitoring performance.

  • Tape Speeds: 7½ ips (19 cm/s) and 15 ips (38 cm/s). Switchable speeds, with 15 ips being the preferred speed for high-fidelity mastering. Some units were configured for 30 ips (76 cm/s) and 15 ips (known as the E-22 model in some markets).

  • Pitch/Varispeed: ±15 % pitch control for fine-tuning speed (useful in mastering and syncing).

  • Transport Motors: Typically three motors (reel left, reel right, capstan) for stable motion and fast winds.
