Additional Information

The Fostex E-22 is a 2-track, 2-channel tape recorder/reproducer that uses ½-inch magnetic tape on larger reels for high-quality stereo recording and playback, often in mastering, broadcast, or professional studio environments. It’s essentially the larger-format counterpart to the Fostex E-2, trading the smaller ¼″ format for ½″ tape and increased performance.

  • Professional Speeds: The dual-speed capability (15 ips and 30 ips) allows for optimal mastering quality (30 ips) or compatibility/archival work (15 ips).

  • Direct Drive Capstan: Features a sophisticated, direct-drive capstan motor system for exceptionally stable and accurate tape movement, which is critical for mastering work.

  • Built-in Calibration: Provides access to internal bias, EQ, and level calibration adjustments, allowing the user (or technician) to align the deck precisely for various professional tape formulations (like Quantegy 499 or RTM SM900).

  • Transport Control: High-performance, logic-controlled transport with features like Pitch Control (Vari-Speed) and multi-point locate memory functions for precise cueing.

  • Tape Format: The use of 1/2" tape for only two tracks provides a massive amount of tape real estate per channel, minimizing crosstalk and noise, and contributing to the excellent sonic performance.

The Fostex E-22 was a serious contender in the professional studio market, providing high-speed, high-fidelity mastering capabilities comparable to machines from manufacturers like Studer and Otari, but often at a more accessible price.
