Additional Information
The Fostex G24S is a landmark machine in the history of project studio recording. Released in the early 1990s, it was Fostex's flagship and final high-end analog multitrack deck, aiming to deliver professional 24-track capabilities in a relatively compact and affordable format. The "S" designation stands for Dolby S noise reduction.
Signal-to-Noise Ratio (CCIR ARM)~88 dB with Dolby S

Inputs/Outputs & Controls
I/O:
24 balanced/unbalanced line inputs/outputs (nominal -10 dBV) on standard connectors, facilitating patchbay/studio integration.Control Panel:
Full transport controls (Play, Stop, Rewind, Fast Forward) with LED level meters for all tracks.
Pitch/Varispeed control for fine-tuning playback speed.
Locate/Memory functions for tape positioning and cueing.Remote & Synchronization: Optional remote panel and sync board features (e.g., sync to SMPTE/MTC or external clock) exist in some configurations.
Operational Features
Varispeed Control: ±12 % pitch control allows precise tape speed adjustments for timing and creative effects.
Zone Limit & Cue-Wind: Prevents overshooting end of tape; cueing in fast wind with audible monitoring via slow-mode wind.
User Interface: Detachable rack ears for mounting, flip-up head cover for access, and multi-function display on some units.
Builds on G16 refinements with improved transport reliability (fewer belt issues than earlier Fostex models); maintenance includes regular demagnetizing, capstan cleaning, and alignment with 1-inch MRL tapes at 355 nWb/m. Known for "tight, dynamic" sound on full tracks but crosstalk limits adjacent bounces; capacitors may need recapping on vintage units.
