Additional Information
The Fostex Model 20 is a two-track analog reel-to-reel tape deck that Fostex introduced in the mid-1980s. Unlike their large multitrack machines (E-series, G-series), the Model 20 was designed as a compact, high-quality stereo master recorder specifically for the project studio environment, often used as a companion to Fostex's multitrack decks for mixdown.
Transport Features
Direct-drive capstan motor ensures stability, with pitch control, tension arms, and standard controls for play, record, fast wind (full reel in ~90 seconds), and mechanical tape counter. Supports IEC and NAB equalization; optional Dolby B/C noise reduction switchable.
Recording and Monitoring
Separate record and playback heads enable off-tape monitoring during overdubs; VU meters for level calibration (0 VU at 250 nWb/m), bias fine-tune knobs per speed. Compact design (around 430 x 250 x 200 mm, ~15 kg) suits rack mounting; balanced I/O minimizes noise.
The Fostex Model 20 served as a reliable, entry-level, three-head master recorder, offering high fidelity and critical time code synchronization capabilities to musicians and producers who needed a dedicated stereo mixdown deck without the physical size and cost of the larger E-2 or professional Otari/Studer machines.
