Additional Information
The Fostex Model 80 is an 8-track, 8-channel analog reel-to-reel recorder/reproducer that runs ¼-inch magnetic tape at 15 ips (inches per second / 38 cm/s). Designed as an evolution of the earlier Fostex A-8, it adds better transport logic, built-in noise reduction, and improved usability for small studios, broadcast work and mixdown duties.
Transport Features
Belt-driven transport with standard controls (play, record, stop, rewind, fast forward), return-to-zero function, and two memory locate points for cueing. Compact dimensions (14" x 13.5" x 6.75", around 15 kg) enable easy portability; a 7-inch reel of 1 mil tape (1800 ft) provides 22 minutes per pass.
Recording and Monitoring
2-head design (erase and combined record/playback) supports overdubbing on any/all tracks via per-channel select buttons; LED or VU metering for levels (calibrated to standard flux). No built-in noise reduction or off-tape monitoring during record, limiting it to basic workflows; RCA connectivity suits direct mixer integration.
Belts and pulleys often require replacement after decades, with capstan/reel motor issues common; demagnetize heads regularly and align with 1/4-inch test tapes. Delivers classic Fostex "tape warmth" (low-end boost) but crosstalk limits bounces; sync via FSK/SMPTE (reducing to 7 tracks).
The Fostex Model 80 was a major success, offering a full 8-track capability in a compact desktop unit at a competitive price, making multitrack analog recording accessible to thousands of home and project studios in the late 80s.
