Additional Information
The Fostex R8 is an important and very popular 8-track analog multitrack reel-to-reel recorder that Fostex released in the late 1980s, succeeding the Model 80. It was the company's ultimate expression of an affordable, compact, computerized 8-track machine, packed with advanced features for the project studio.
Its main technical challenge and defining characteristic is squeezing eight tracks onto a narrow 1/4-inch tape format.
Inputs, Outputs & Controls
Line Inputs: Unbalanced line-level inputs (nominal ≈ 300 mV, -10 dBV) via RCAs, intended to interface with mixers or preamps.
Line Outputs: Unbalanced RCAs at ≈ 0.3 V line level.
Dolby Noise Reduction: Built-in Dolby C noise reduction (can be switched on/off), which reduces hiss on narrow tracks — omitted is the ability to leave noise reduction off on a timecode track, unlike some earlier models.
Remote / Detachable Panel: The front control panel detaches and can be used remotely — a useful feature in studio setups.
Auto-Locate & Memory: The deck includes auto-locate/auto-play, memory points (up to ~10 locations), zone limits, and pre-roll functions (0–9 s) for precise navigation and repeat takes.
Recording and Monitoring
Supports overdubbing on any/all tracks with per-channel select buttons and LED bargraph meters; monitoring via inputs (no off-tape during record). Includes punch in/out, repeat loops for calibration, and Dolby C toggle; starts in <0.5 seconds.
The Fostex R8 is highly valued today for its full set of computerized studio features in a compact form factor, making it one of the most feature-rich and popular 8-track recorders of its generation.
