Philips EL3542 is a portable, valve-based 4-track mono reel-to-reel tape recorder from around 1960, designed for domestic and semi-professional use with extended frequency response for its era.



Design and Transport


Compact table-top unit with carrying handle, removable lid, and piano-key push-button controls (play, record, pause, fast wind/rewind, stop). Single motor idler/capstan drive system supports up to 7" (18cm) reels; automatic stop via metalized leader tape; 4-digit resettable tape counter; track selector switch.

  • Tracks: 4-track mono (quarter-track, 2 tracks per side/direction for double playing time).

  • Speeds: 2.38, 4.76, 9.5 cm/s (15/16, 1⅞, 3¾ ips).
