The Pioneer T-6600 is a 1971–1975 mid-fi auto-reverse stereo reel-to-reel tape deck from Pioneer's T-series, featuring dual-head technology for seamless forward/reverse recording and playback on 7-inch reels, positioned as an upgrade over basic T-5000/T-6000 models.

Transport and Format

  • Tracks: 4-track/2-channel stereo (quarter-inch tape); auto-reverse via sensing foil.

  • Heads: 4 total – 2 permalloy 4-track record/playback heads (one per direction), 2 erase heads.

  • Speeds: 3¾ ips (9.5 cm/s) and 7½ ips (19 cm/s); NAB equalization.

  • Reels: Up to 7-inch (18 cm); rewind ~110 sec for 1200 ft tape.

  • Frequency response (±3 dB): 30 Hz–20 kHz (7½ ips); 30 Hz–13 kHz (3¾ ips).

  • Wow/flutter: ≤0.12% WRMS (7½ ips), ≤0.20% (3¾ ips).

Audiophile Context

This square-profile deck (horizontal/vertical use) refines the T-6000's auto-reverse with better meters and stability for extended sessions, though single-motor limits wow/flutter vs. later 3-motor RT-1011 decks; collectible for convenience in compact setups.
