Additional Information
The Sony TC-250A is a minor revision of the highly successful TC-250 stereo deck, released in the late 1960s (circa 1968–1970). Like its predecessor, the TC-250A was marketed as a high-value, all-in-one stereo component, featuring a recorder, integrated stereo amplifier, and speakers in one portable tabletop chassis.
The "A" designation generally indicates subtle internal electronic or aesthetic updates, but the core technical architecture—a two-head, quarter-track, single-motor system—remained the same.
Transport and tape format
Track format: 4‑track, 2‑channel stereo/mono on ¼‑inch tape (standard quarter‑track stereo).
Tape speeds: Two speeds, 7½ ips (19 cm/s) and 3¾ ips (9.5 cm/s), selected by a speed lever that also switches record/playback EQ to the correct NAB characteristic.
Reel capacity: Takes up to 7‑inch reels; flat‑bed deck usable horizontally or vertically, with automatic shut‑off at tape end.
Heads: 2‑head system – one 4‑track stereo record/playback head plus one 4‑track stereo erase head (inline type, permalloy construction).
Electronics and audio performance
Electronics: Fully transistorized with about 10 silicon transistors and several diodes; built‑in recording/playback preamp so it can feed the line/aux input of any stereo amp.
Frequency response: At 7½ ips, approximately 30 Hz–18 kHz; at 3¾ ips, about 30 Hz–13 kHz.
Wow & flutter: Not more than 0.19% at 7½ ips and 0.25% at 3¾ ips.
Signal‑to‑noise ratio: ≥ 50 dB for record + playback; THD ≤ 1% at reference line level.
Bias/eq: NAB equalization; bias oscillator around 55 kHz, with bias reduced automatically when the record level is turned down to minimize print‑through at low levels.
Inputs, outputs and controls
Inputs:
Mic input: approx. 600 Ω, max sensitivity around −72 dB (0.2 mV) for dynamic microphones.
Auxiliary/line input: high‑impedance (≈200 kΩ) with sensitivity around −18 dB (0.1 V).Outputs:
Line output: about 0.775 V at ≈2 kΩ to drive the line/aux of a stereo amplifier.
DIN “rec/play” connector providing combined record and playback at 0.775 V, ≈500 kΩ load.Controls and indicators: Twin VU meters, record level and balance, tape/source monitoring, speed selector linked to EQ, pause lever, tape counter, and power/transport levers grouped on the front panel.
Power, construction and role
Power: Multi‑voltage AC mains (100/110/117/125/220/240 V, 50/60 Hz), about 40 W consumption.
Size and weight: Approx. 360 × 158 × 287 mm; about 7.7 kg (≈16¾ lb), in a removable wooden cabinet so the chassis can be built into a console if desired.
Intended use: Positioned as a “mid high‑fidelity” stereo deck for home users wanting serious tape performance without a three‑head, multi‑motor transport; today it is valued as a simple, robust, single‑motor Sony with good musical results once belts, lubrication, and electrolytics are refreshed.
