Following on from the 151, the 161 used the newer reversible Collaro Transcriptor Mk IV deck with two-way recording and playback across three speeds. Improvements over the 151 included superimposing, basic input mixing and a side-hinged lid able to store three 7 inch spools of tape, while being significantly smaller, lighter and cheaper.
