Additional Information

The Studer A80 is a highly regarded professional analog reel-to-reel tape recorder, widely considered one of the best tape machines ever designed. It was produced from 1970 until the late 1980s and has been a staple in recording studios around the world.

Technical Overview of the Studer A80:

Tape Transport & Format:

  • Supports tape widths from 1/4 inch up to 2 inches (configurable via change of headblock, reel adapters, tape guides, and capstan motor shaft).

  • Configurations range from 1 channel (mono) to 24 channels depending on headblock and electronics fitted.

  • Tape Speeds: Common speeds are 7.5 and 15 ips; some versions support 15/30 ips.

  • Reel size up to 12.5 inches (31.8 cm) for metal reels or plates.

Mechanics:

  • Heavy-duty, die-cast aluminum chassis providing a rigid base for tape transport.

  • Loadable and removable transport sub-assemblies for simplified servicing.

  • Three motors: one servo-controlled AC capstan motor, and two spooling motors.

  • Capstan motor uses servo control for tape speed stability independent of mains frequency fluctuations.

  • Tape tension electronically controlled before and after the capstan, with precision tape guides ensuring minimal tape slippage, low wow, and flutter.

Audio Electronics:

  • Balanced XLR inputs and outputs.

  • Head composition: Permalloy heads in stacked/inline or butterfly arrangements.

  • Equalization switchable between CCIR (IEC) and NAB standards.

  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio: 61 dB at 15 ips; 58 dB at 7.5 ips.

  • Wow and Flutter: 0.04% at 15 ips; 0.06% at 7.5 ips.

  • Frequency Response: 30 Hz to 18 kHz at 15 ips; 30 Hz to 15 kHz at 7.5 ips.

  • Plug-in amplifier and equalizer modules for easy maintenance and customization.

Controls & Features:

  • Digital tape timer with hour, minute, and second display.

  • Editing features with jog and shuttle controls.

  • Electronic transport mode switching and memory functions.

  • Adjustable azimuth for both record and playback heads from above without removing headblock.

  • Built-in splicing block, scissors, and tape marker.

  • Optical electronic end-of-tape sensor with adjustable sensitivity.

  • Optional VU meter bridge with service monitor and headphone output.

  • RS232 remote control and optional varispeed adjustment of ±7 semitones.

  • Library wind mode for reduced tape speed spooling.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Weight ~50+ kg depending on configuration.

  • Dimensions approximately 900 mm (H) × 700 mm (W) × 600 mm (D).

  • Mains voltage: 110-120V or 220-240V AC selectable.

Versions:

  • Various models such as A80-R (with standard features), A80-RC (with repositioned electronics for easy disassembly), and VU meter options (RC VU).

  • Models supporting stereo or multi-track operation.

  • Adaptable for mono or stereo recording by switching options.

The Studer A80 is renowned for its exceptional build quality, mechanical precision, and superior audio performance, making it a benchmark for analog tape recording. It played a central role in professional studios during the analog era and remains highly sought after for mastering and archival purposes today
