Additional Information

The TEAC A-1230 is a solid-state, 4-track, 2-channel stereo reel-to-reel tape deck manufactured in Japan between 1971 and 1973. It is designed for high-quality stereo recording and playback with professional-level features at an affordable price.

Track and Head System

  • 4-track, 2-channel stereo/monaural system.

  • Three heads: one record, one playback, and one erase head.

  • Tape width and head configuration allow stereo recording and playback on quarter-track tape.

Tape Transport and Motors

  • Three motors:
One hysteresis synchronous capstan motor for precise tape speed control.
Two 6-pole winding reel motors for stable tape tension and smooth winding.

  • Tape speeds: 9.5 cm/s (3¾ ips) and 19 cm/s (7½ ips) with ±0.5% speed accuracy.

  • Wow and flutter (synchronization fluctuations): less than 0.10% at 9.5 cm/s and less than 0.08% at 19 cm/s.

  • Rewind speed: approximately 90 seconds for 370 meters of tape.

Frequency Response and Sound Quality

  • Frequency response:
    40 Hz to 12 kHz ±3 dB at 9.5 cm/s (3¾ ips)
    40 Hz to 18 kHz ±3 dB at 19 cm/s (7½ ips)

  • Signal-to-noise ratio: greater than 55 dB.

  • Total harmonic distortion: less than 1% at 1 kHz.

  • Crosstalk attenuation: 50 dB at 1 kHz.

  • Cancellation attenuation: 60 dB at 1 kHz.

  • Equalization conforms to NARTB standards.

Inputs and Outputs

  • Microphone input: 0.25 mV, -72 dB, 600 Ω to 10 kΩ impedance, via 6.35 mm jack.

  • Line inputs: 100 mV (Cinch/RCA) and 30 mV (DIN connector).

  • Line output: adjustable, 300 mV at 10 kΩ load (Cinch/RCA).

  • Headphone output: 8 Ω via 6.35 mm jack.

Physical and Operational Features

  • Dimensions: 440 x 383 x 203 mm (WxHxD).

  • Weight: approximately 17 kg.

  • Supports reel sizes up to 7 inches (18 cm).

  • Can be operated vertically or horizontally.

  • Solid build with silver and black finish and wooden cabinet sides.

  • Designed for use with compatible TEAC integrated amplifiers and tuners but also works well with other hi-fi systems.

  • Known for reliable operation and good sound quality for its class and era.
