TEAC A-1250

The TEAC A-1250 is a 4-track, 2-channel stereo reel-to-reel tape deck with automatic reverse playback, produced in Japan between 1971 and 1975. It is an evolution of the A-1230 model, adding reverse playback capability and automatic reverse circuitry for enhanced usability.

Track and Head System

• 4-track, 2-channel stereo/monaural system with three heads (erase, record, playback) plus a reverse playback head for automatic reverse operation.

• Head material: Permalloy, known for durability and good magnetic properties.

Tape Transport and Motors

• Three-motor mechanism: one hysteresis synchronous capstan motor for precise tape speed control, and two 6-pole eddy current reel motors for stable tape tension and smooth winding.

• Tape speeds: 3¾ ips (9.5 cm/s) and 7½ ips (19 cm/s) with ±0.5% speed accuracy.

• Wow and flutter: 0.08% at 7½ ips, 0.10% at 3¾ ips.

• Supports 5- or 7-inch reels.

• Rewind time: approximately 90 seconds for 370 meters (1200 feet) of tape.

Frequency Response and Sound Quality

• Frequency response:
  30 Hz to 22 kHz at 7½ ips (±3 dB)
  30 Hz to 16 kHz at 3¾ ips

• Signal-to-noise ratio: approximately 55 dB.

• Total harmonic distortion: about 1% at 1 kHz.

• Crosstalk: 60 dB at 1 kHz.

• Bias frequency: 100 kHz.

Inputs and Outputs

• Microphone inputs: 0.3 mV minimum, 600 Ω impedance.

• Line inputs: 100 mV (line), 0.1 V minimum, 50 kΩ impedance.

• Line outputs: 0.3 V for 10 kΩ load or more.
