Additional Information

The TEAC A-2300 is a 4-track, 2-channel stereo reel-to-reel tape deck produced in the 1970s, designed for high-fidelity analog recording and playback with robust mechanical and electronic features.

Track and Head System

  • 4-track, 2-channel stereo/monaural quarter-track format.

  • Three heads: separate erase, record, and playback heads made of permalloy with front shielding for improved channel separation (over 50 dB).

  • Hyperbolic head design for reduced distortion and excellent frequency response.

Tape Transport and Motors

  • Three-motor system: two eddy current induction reel motors and one 2-speed hysteresis synchronous capstan motor.

  • Large, dynamically balanced capstan flywheel for stable tape speed and low wow and flutter.

  • Tape speeds: 3¾ ips (9.5 cm/s) and 7½ ips (19 cm/s) with ±0.5% accuracy.

  • Supports 5- and 7-inch reels (Type 12 and Type 17).

  • Wow and flutter: approximately 0.12% at 19 cm/s (7½ ips), 0.15% at 9.5 cm/s (3¾ ips).

  • Automatic stop mechanism when tape reaches end or after rewind.

Frequency Response and Sound Quality

  • Frequency response:
    7½ ips: 30 Hz to 20 kHz (±3 dB)
    3¾ ips: 30 Hz to 15 kHz (±3 dB)

  • Signal-to-noise ratio: about 50 dB.

  • Total harmonic distortion: approximately 1% at reference level.

  • Crosstalk: 60 dB at 1 kHz.

  • Stereo separation: 50 dB at 1 kHz.

Inputs and Outputs

  • Microphone input: 0.3 mV minimum, 10 kΩ impedance.

  • Line input: 0.1 V minimum, 100 kΩ impedance.

  • Line output: 0.3 V for 10 kΩ load or more.

  • Headphone output: 8 Ω.

  • Connectors: RCA and DIN types.

Additional Features

  • Independent volume controls for microphone and line inputs, allowing mixing during recording.

  • Stainless steel front panel and solid metal chassis with wooden side panels in some versions (e.g., A-2300BLACK).

  • 4-digit mechanical tape counter with push-button reset.

  • Adjustable reel base height for tape edge protection.

  • Mechanical filter combining guide post and tension arm for stable tape travel.

  • Brake mechanism with epoxy resin and felt to protect tape during stopping.

  • Cooling fans for motors and solenoids to prevent overheating.

  • Compatible with horizontal and vertical placement.

Physical Specifications

  • Dimensions: approximately 440 mm (W) x 357 mm (H) x 203 mm (D) for A-2300; slightly taller for A-2300BLACK.

  • Weight: around 17–18 kg.

  • Power consumption: approximately 140 W at 100 VAC, 50/60 Hz.

This model is regarded as part of TEAC’s strong 1970s lineup, balancing cost and performance, and remains popular among vintage tape deck enthusiasts.
