Additional Information

The TEAC A-6100 MKII is a high-quality, semi-professional 2-track, 2-channel stereo reel-to-reel tape deck originally introduced in 1973, designed specifically for mastering applications. It is renowned for its robust construction, exceptional sound quality, and precise tape transport, making it a sought-after machine among audiophiles and mastering engineers.

Track and Head System

  • 2-track, 2-channel stereo/monaural quarter-track format.

  • Four heads: separate record, playback, erase, and a dedicated playback head for monitoring.

  • Permalloy heads with precise gap for wide frequency response and low distortion.

Tape Transport and Motors

  • Three motors: one 2-speed hysteresis synchronous capstan motor and two eddy current induction reel motors for stable tape tension and precise speed control.

  • Tape speeds: 7½ ips (19 cm/s) and 15 ips (38 cm/s) with ±0.5% speed accuracy.

  • Supports 7-inch and 10½-inch reels.

  • Wow and flutter: approximately 0.15% at 15 ips.

  • Automatic stop and tape tension sensing mechanisms.

Performance Specifications

  • Frequency response: 40 Hz to 26 kHz at 15 ips.

  • Signal-to-noise ratio: around 55 dB (weighted).

  • Total harmonic distortion: low, with excellent linearity.

  • Crosstalk: high channel separation for clean stereo imaging.

Inputs and Outputs

  • Balanced and unbalanced line inputs and outputs (RCA and DIN connectors).

  • Microphone input with mixing capability.

  • Headphone output.

  • Adjustable record and playback equalization settings.

Additional Features

  • Simul-Sync® technology allowing simultaneous monitoring of the recorded signal.

  • Bias current and equalizer adjustments for various tape formulations.

  • Large, illuminated VU meters for precise level monitoring.

  • Robust, indestructible build quality with a solid metal chassis.

  • Designed specifically for mastering, emphasizing reliability and sonic purity.

  • Compatible with large reels and professional studio setups.

  • Controls to fine-tune sound including record/playback EQ settings and tape speed selection.

  • The A-6100 MKII was the basis for the later TEAC 80-8 multitrack recorder.

Physical Specifications

  • Dimensions: approximately 440 mm (W) x 440 mm (H) x 230 mm (D).

  • Weight: around 20 kg (44 lbs).

  • Power consumption: typical for professional tape decks of the era.
