Additional Information
The TEAC X-10 is a solid-state, mid-high fidelity 4-track, 2-channel stereo reel-to-reel tape deck produced in Japan between 1979 and 1982. It is designed for consumer and audiophile use, offering precise analog tape recording and playback with robust features.
Track and Head System
4-track, 2-channel stereo system (quarter-track format).
Three independent heads: erase, record, and playback, all made of high-hardness permalloy for durability and excellent magnetic properties.
The erase head is positioned outside the tape loop to minimize tape span and improve sound quality.
Tape Transport and Motors
Dual capstan drive system with two sets of capstans and pinch rollers sandwiching the tape, reducing modulation noise and flutter by stabilizing tape tension.
Three motors: one FG servo DC capstan motor and two DC reel motors for precise tape speed and tension control.
Magne-float type flywheel for stable capstan rotation without axial play.
Tape speeds: 3¾ ips (9.5 cm/s) and 7½ ips (19 cm/s) with ±0.03% WRMS speed variation at 7½ ips.
Supports reels up to 10.5 inches (No. 10 reels).
Performance Specifications
Frequency response:
7½ ips: 30 Hz to 34 kHz (±3 dB)
3¾ ips: 30 Hz to 24 kHz (±3 dB)Wow and flutter: 0.05% at 7½ ips.
Signal-to-noise ratio: approximately 50 dB at 7½ ips.
Total harmonic distortion: less than 0.8% at 1 kHz.
Crosstalk attenuation: about 50 dB.
Equalization: NAB standard.
Inputs and Outputs
Microphone input: 0.25 mV sensitivity, 10 kΩ impedance.
Line input: 60 mV, 50 kΩ impedance.
Line output: 0.45 V at 10 kΩ load.
Headphone output: 8 Ω.
Connectors: RCA and DIN types.
Additional Features
Timer recording capability with a front panel timer switch and compatibility with commercial audio timers.
Large, base-lit VU meters for accurate level monitoring.
Record mute function button and mic/line mixing capability.
±6% pitch control for speed adjustment during playback and recording.
4-digit tape counter for position tracking.
Logic control system for reliable operation.
Provision for external dbx noise reduction unit connection.
Optional remote control (RC-90), dust cover (TZ-550), rack mounting kit, and other accessories available.
No auto-reverse; recording and playback are single-direction only.
Physical Specifications
Dimensions: approximately 432 mm (W) x 452 mm (H) x 262 mm (D).
Weight: about 20 kg (44 lbs).
Power consumption: up to 110 W.
While it lacks auto-reverse, the X-10’s robust build, advanced tape transport, and compatibility with external dbx noise reduction units place it among the notable TEAC tape decks of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
