Additional Information

The TEAC X-10 MKII is a high-quality, solid-state, 4-track, 2-channel stereo reel-to-reel tape deck released in 1981, designed for audiophiles and semi-professional users seeking precise analog tape performance.

Track and Head System

  • 4-track, 2-channel stereo system with three independent heads: erase, record, and playback.

  • Heads made of high-hardness permalloy for durability and excellent magnetic performance.

Tape Transport and Motors

  • Closed-loop dual capstan drive system with two sets of capstans and pinch rollers, stabilizing tape tension and reducing flutter and modulation noise.

  • Three motors: one FG servo DC motor driving the capstan and two slotless DC motors driving the reels.

  • Tape speeds: 19 cm/s (7½ ips) and 9.5 cm/s (3¾ ips) with ±0.5% speed accuracy.

  • Reel size support: up to 10.5 inches (No. 10 reels).

  • Magnet-float type flywheel for high rotational accuracy.

Performance Specifications

  • Wow and flutter (WRMS): 0.03% at 19 cm/s, 0.04% at 9.5 cm/s.

  • Frequency response (using EE tape): 30 Hz to 34 kHz at 19 cm/s, 30 Hz to 24 kHz at 9.5 cm/s.

  • Signal-to-noise ratio: 65 dB (3% THD level, weighted).

  • Total harmonic distortion: 0.8% at reference level.

  • Stereo channel separation: 50 dB at 1 kHz.

Inputs and Outputs

  • Microphone input sensitivity: 0.25 mV (-72 dB), compatible with microphones of 200 Ω or more.

  • Line input: 60 mV, 50 kΩ impedance.

  • Line output: 0.45 V at 10 kΩ or more.

  • Headphone output: 8 Ω.

  • Connectors: RCA and DIN types.

Additional Features

  • Playback pause mechanism for accurate head positioning.

  • Direct function for smooth transition from quick winding to playback.

  • Microphone and line mixing capability.

  • Pitch control function active during both recording and playback, allowing ±6% speed adjustment.

  • Rec Mute mechanism for silent gaps during recording.

  • Timer standby mechanism for scheduled recording.

  • Left-right linked recording mode switch.

  • Guide roller to absorb tape unevenness and ensure smooth running.

  • Provision for external dbx noise reduction unit connection.

  • Large, base-lit VU meters for precise level monitoring.

  • Optional accessories: remote controller (RC-90), acrylic dust cover (TZ-550), wood case (CS-100), and dbx noise reduction unit (DX-2A).

Physical Specifications

  • Dimensions: 432 mm (W) x 452 mm (H) x 262 mm (D).

  • Weight: approximately 20 kg (44 lbs).

  • Power consumption: 65 W at 100 VAC, 50/60 Hz.

This model supports large 10.5-inch reels and offers connectivity for external dbx noise reduction, further improving sound quality. Its build quality and feature set place it among the notable TEAC tape decks of the early 1980s.
