Additional Information
The TEAC X-3R is a 4-track, 2-channel stereo reel-to-reel tape deck produced around 1983, designed for audiophile and semi-professional use with advanced features for its class.
Track and Head System
4-track, 2-channel stereo/monaural system.
Three heads: one erase, one record, and one playback head made of high-hardness permalloy.
The playback head is a 4-track type, enabling bi-directional playback.
The deck uses a 3-head configuration, with a single capstan and three motors.
Tape Transport and Motors
Three motors:
One DC servo motor driving the capstan for precise tape speed control.
Two induction reel motors for stable tape tension and smooth winding.Tape speeds: 3¾ ips (9.5 cm/s) and 7½ ips (19 cm/s).
Maximum reel size: 7 inches.
Performance Specifications
Frequency response: up to 34 kHz (±3 dB), supporting extended frequency range tapes (Extra Efficiency, EE tapes).
Wow and flutter: approximately 0.06% at 7½ ips.
Signal-to-noise ratio: about 49 dB.
Total harmonic distortion: approximately 1.5%.
Equipped with NAB equalization.
Supports EE (Extra Efficiency) tape compatibility for improved performance.
Inputs and Outputs
Two microphone inputs with adjustable levels.
Line input and output via RCA connectors.
Headphone jack included.
VU meters for monitoring recording and playback levels.
Additional Features
Auto-reverse playback with foil sensing to detect tape end and switch direction automatically.
Two VU meters for accurate level metering.
Compact design with optional acrylic cover (TZ-530).
Power consumption around 85 W at 100 VAC, 50/60 Hz.
Dimensions approximately 410 x 326 x 231 mm (W x H x D).
Weight about 14–15 kg (31–33 lbs).
Its combination of features, including auto-reverse, foil sensing, and extended frequency response, places it as a capable and user-friendly machine in TEAC’s lineup during that period.
