Aja

Aja is a boutique British turntable brand designed and manufactured in the United Kingdom by Tony Whittle, debuting around 2020 as a high-end, limited-production offering for vinyl enthusiasts.

Origins and Designer

Tony Whittle, a UK-based audio designer with experience in hi-fi components, launched Aja to deliver precision analog playback with modern aesthetics. The brand emphasizes handmade construction, exotic finishes, and vibration isolation, positioning it among niche UK makers like Systemdek or Avid during the vinyl revival.

Manufacturing History

Production began in 2020 with initial models showcased in high-end audio blogs and shows. All units are hand-built in the UK using premium materials: American Black Walnut or McLaren burnt orange plinths, high-mass platters, and advanced bearing systems for low rumble and speed stability. No mass production or offshoring—focus remains on custom, small-batch runs.

Design Philosophy

Aja turntables feature belt-drive mechanisms, decoupled subchassis, and outboard power supplies akin to classic UK designs (e.g., Linn, Rega influences). Specs include low wow/flutter (<0.1%), high S/N ratios (>70dB), and compatibility with premium tonearms/cartridges. Two finish variants launched first, with potential expansions announced but limited historical output due to artisanal scale.

This short manufacturing arc reflects post-2010 vinyl resurgence trends, prioritizing quality over volume.
