Additional information

The Basis Audio 2000 Signature Turntable is a high-end analog audio device that exemplifies precision engineering and innovative design. It is part of the Basis 2000 series, which includes models renowned for their exceptional sound quality and build.

Design and Build Quality

  • Platter and Bearing System: The turntable features a 2-inch thick composite platter made from stress-relieved acrylic, which is crucial for minimizing resonance and enhancing sound clarity. This platter rests on an ultra-close tolerance oil-well bearing, designed to achieve minimal lateral forces, thus reducing friction and noise levels significantly. The bearing's unique multi-component structure places the center of gravity directly between its bushings, resulting in a very stable operation.

  • Plinth Construction: The plinth is also constructed from 2-inch thick stress-relieved acrylic, providing a robust foundation that contributes to the overall stability and sound performance of the turntable. This material choice helps to isolate vibrations effectively, ensuring that external noise does not interfere with playback quality.

Suspension System

The Basis 2000 employs a sophisticated fluid-damped suspension system, which is critical for isolating the turntable from environmental vibrations. This system, referred to as "Resonance Annihilators," converts vibrational energy into heat, thereby preventing it from affecting the sound quality. The design provides 48 dB greater isolation from motor noise compared to non-suspended systems, allowing for clearer musical detail retrieval.

Motor and Drive System

The turntable utilizes a custom-modified AC synchronous motor, known for its speed stability. The motor is isolated from the turntable's critical components via elastomer isolators, which further dampen vibrations. This configuration ensures a cog-free drive system that maintains consistent speed without introducing unwanted noise or distortion into the audio signal.

Vacuum Record Hold-Down System

An optional feature of the Basis 2000 Signature is its Vacuum Record Hold-Down System, which applies controlled negative pressure to the underside of records. This system effectively flattens warped records and eliminates resonance, allowing for optimal coupling between the record and platter. It enhances dynamics, imaging, and overall musicality by ensuring that records remain perfectly flat during playback.

Performance Metrics

The Basis 2000 Signature is engineered for outstanding performance metrics:

  • Wow and Flutter: Achieves an industry-leading specification of 0.01%, indicating minimal speed variation during playback.

  • Speed Drift: Maintains a speed drift of only 0.012%, ensuring consistent playback speed over time.
