I find myself walking the halls of an audio show and being struck by how many tables in a room can look like variations on the same shoebox. Different veneers, different badges, sometimes wildly different price tags. But the silhouette rarely changes, a rectangular plinth, a platter, an arm mounted somewhere off to one side. It is a good shoebox, mechanically speaking. I just find myself wondering, more each year, whether it has to be a shoebox at all.

When a company buys a dormant hi-fi brand, legally speaking they are buying a bundle of trademarks. What survives is rarely the factory, the tooling, or the workforce. What survives is the name, sitting in an intellectual-property portfolio, sometimes on another continent, waiting for someone to decide if it is worth something. And it usually is worth something.
