I have spent more than thirty years around turntables. Building them, measuring them, arguing about them at trade shows over coffee that has usually gone cold by the time the argument has finished. And yet still, on occasion, I find myself walking the halls of an audio show and being struck by how many tables in a room can look like variations on the same shoebox. Different veneers, different badges, sometimes wildly different price tags. But the silhouette rarely changes, a rectangular plinth, a platter, an arm mounted somewhere off to one side. It is a good shoebox, mechanically speaking. I just find myself wondering, more each year, whether it has to be a shoebox at all.


The usual answer, when I raise this with engineers I respect, is that the shape is dictated by physics. I am being told that mass distribution, resonance control, bearing geometry, the need for a rigid, inert platform that won't colour the signal, requires a box. All true. But I have come round to thinking that we have let a genuine technical constraint quietly set into an aesthetic default, and that those are in fact not the same. A rectangle satisfies the physics. It does not require it.


I keep coming back to watchmaking as the clearest example I know of an industry that once made exactly this mistake, and eventually stopped.


For most of its history, a watch case existed to do one job, that being to keep dust, moisture, and shock away from a delicate mechanical movement. That is a real engineering requirement, not that different from what a turntable plinth has to do for a stylus tracing a groove. And for a long time, the industry's answer to that requirement was visually conservative almost by reflex. Round, closed, precious-metal cases that gave you no hint of what was ticking inside. The case was a vault. Nobody expected the vault to be interesting inside.


What changed the scenery, for me, was the 1972 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. Gérald Genta did not solve a new engineering problem. Steel sports watches with integrated bracelets already existed. But Genta made a specific choice which perfectly illustrates this argument. He put the screws on the outside of the bezel and left them exposed, visible, arranged with obvious intent. The fastener, the most purely functional element you can imagine, became an ornament. Nothing about the watch's accuracy or water resistance depended on those screws being visible. They were visible because Genta decided that the structure of the object being made visible was interesting. More than hiding it under a smooth, polite case.

That decision opened a door to a range of independent styles that watchmakers have adopted ever since, in increasingly ambitious ways. Richard Mille's cases are not decoration wrapped around a movement. The tonneau-shaped case is a load-bearing chassis, often machined from aerospace-grade titanium or carbon composite, with a skeletonized baseplate and a sapphire crystal case that lets you see straight through into the structure doing the work. MB&F's Horological Machines look, frankly, like something that crawled out of a sculptor's notebook, and yet they keep time. Urwerk shapes the entire case around a satellite display mechanism nobody else uses, so the form genuinely could not exist without that specific function. In every one of these, the engineering did not get compromised to make room for the design. The design is a clear part of the engineering. You can look at the object and see exactly what it is doing.

I do not think turntable design is starting from zero here. Some designers have already found their way to something like this. Bergmann Audio builds air-bearing tangential arm assemblies into sculptural, asymmetric plinths that look nothing like a box because the arm's geometry is dictating the shape rather than being an afterthought bolted onto one. Wilson Benesch has been making carbon-fibre monocoque chassis for turntables the same way they do for their speaker cabinets, treating the structure as one continuous composed form rather than a box with parts screwed to the top. Continuum Audio Labs' Obsidian and Criterion are unapologetically asymmetric, built around the air-bearing arm rather than around a rectangle that the arm happens to sit on. Clearaudio's Statement is, by any reasonable definition, a piece of sculpture that also happens to be an extremely serious turntable. None of these designers loosened a single tolerance to get there. If anything, the sculptural quality comes directly from taking the engineering more seriously, not less. Every visible mass, every strut, every isolation point is there because it is doing something, and the designer chose not to bury that under a veneer.

So, the capability clearly exists. What I think is still missing, across most of the market, including plenty of tables I genuinely admire on sonic grounds, is the sense that the enclosure was designed at all, rather than specified. A veneer selection is not a design language. And I want to be careful here, because I have also watched watchmaking flirt with the opposite, and fail. Novelty pursued for its own sake, cases so busy performing "architecture" that they stop being understandable as a solution to anything. That is not what I am arguing for. A turntable that is sculptural but no longer tells you anything about how it isolates vibration or manages bearing load has just traded one kind of dishonesty for another.


What I find genuinely interesting is the more specific underlying question. If mass distribution, damping, and bearing geometry are already the sculptural material a turntable designer has to work with, the way a balance wheel and a mainspring are the sculptural material a watchmaker works with, what happens if more of the industry treated them that way on purpose, rather than as constraints to be hidden under ash veneer? I do not think there is a single answer, and I would be suspicious of anyone who claimed there was. It might be preferable to have an exposed motor pod that looks like a genuine mechanical statement, rather than having it as a hidden subassembly. It might mean a plinth whose asymmetry comes directly from where the arm bearing needs to sit rather than from a stylist's sketch. It might, for some designs, mean staying rectangular, if the rectangle is actually the best shape for that particular set of engineering choices, rather than the shape nobody thought to question.

That is really the distinction I would invite anyone designing or specifying a turntable to ask. Is this shape doing something, or is it just what turntables have always looked like? I do not have a specific advice to hand you. I have thirty years of watching one industry decide the mechanism was worth showing, and another industry that, in places, is only just starting to ask the same question of itself. I suspect the answer will look different at every workbench, and that is rather the point.
